Lenovo shipped 14 million handsets during its fiscal second quarter, up 25% sequentially

Chinese manufacturer Lenovo shipped 14 million handsets during its fiscal second quarter, which ended on September 30th. That was a strong 25% sequential increase from the first fiscal quarter that ended in June. Sales of mobile devices rose 20% from fiscal Q1, although they were down 12% on a year-over-year basis. Overall, the mobile division had a pre-tax loss of $156 million for the quarter, an improvement from the previous three month period. Margins were -7.7%, which was still 4.4 percentage points better than fiscal Q1 margins.

Motorola shipments were up 40% since the Motorola G4 and Motorola Moto Z line started shipping. The latter has already sold one million units and Lenovo has a target of 3 million for the first 12 months. Not that there could be a direct comparison, but Lenovo is publicizing the fact that the Moto Z line is selling at the same rate as the original Apple iPhone did in 2007. We should point out that based on AT&T sales in Mexico, Motorola has the leading market share in premium devices (those priced at above $350). Motorola controls 52.5% of that market compared to 39.4% for Apple.

"Market conditions remained challenging but we delivered solid results...our Mobile business had good quarter-to-quarter volume growth and margin improvement...We have also added several of the industry’s top minds into Lenovo, and are continuing to strengthen our leadership team. We remain confident in our vision, our strategy and our team’s ability to achieve new heights."-Yang Yuanqing, Chairman and CEO, Lenovo

Lenovo is trying to expand the Moto Mods modular accessories for the Moto Z range. To that end, Lenovo is partnering __with crowdfunding site Indiegogo as a way to help developers raise enough money to market their Moto Mods creations. Developers are asked to submit their new Moto Mods ideas to Indiegogo before beginning to actively fund them. Developers of the most popular ideas will get to pitch them at Motorola HQ.  Winning developers will have their Moto Mods funded by Lenovo Capital and Verizon Ventures. Lenovo says, "We know we can't come up __with every Moto Mods idea on our own, and real innovation doesn't happen behind closed doors."
