Moto X (2017) reportedly shown off in leaked photos

Moto X 2017 hands-on photos leak

Now that the Moto G5 is ready to launch, the rumor mill is turning its attention to another new Moto phone: the Moto X.

New images of what’s said to be the Moto X (2017) have leaked out. The photos show a device __with Moto branding and a metal body that’s reminiscent of the Moto G5, __with a round rear camera housing and a fingerprint reader below the display. While the Moto G5 is model number XT1687, though, this alleged Moto X identifies itself as the XT1801.

Moto X 2017 specs leak

When it comes to features, this Moto X (2017) appears to have dual rear camera sensors, which would be a first for the Moto X series. There’s also a front-facing camera with a flash, and the recovery screen claims that this Moto X has 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a Snapdragon 625 processor.

There’s no word on when this new Moto X might launch, so for now we’ll just have to ogle these leaked images. If today’s leak is accurate, it looks like this Moto X will a mid-range device, which doesn’t come as a huge surprise considering that the Moto Z devices are Moto’s flagship smartphones.

Microsoft giving Cortana for Android lock screen features

Cortana for Android app

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Microsoft was working on a way to get its Cortana assistant working on the lock screen of Android phones. Now that feature is official.

Microsoft is officially rolling out Android lock screen support for its Cortana app. __with this feature, you can get answers to your questions, set reminders, and more, all without having to unlock your smartphone.

The addition of lock screen support is big for Cortana. Because Microsoft’s assistant isn’t built into Android like Google’s is, folks that want to use Cortana would previously have to unlock the phone and launch the Cortana app, which takes more steps than just using Google’s assistant. Now you can get Cortana info without unlocking your Android device, making it a much more attractive option.

Microsoft is also improving the Cortana home on Android. These enhancements include glanceable info like your schedule, commute times, and reminders, as well as the ability to quickly add reminders and new calendar items. Lists are easier to access __with this update, too.

Finally, Microsoft is rolling out its Cortana apps for Android and iOS in Australia today.

Movado, Hugo Boss, and Tommy Hilfiger reveal new Android Wear smartwatches

Movado Connect Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch

We’ve seen several new Android Wear smartwatches debut this week at the Baselworld conference in Switzerland, and today we can add three more new wearables to that list.

First up, Movado today revealed the smartwatch that it teased earlier this month. The Movado Connect features a very Movado design, complete __with a single dot up at the top of its face as well as pointed minute and hour hands.

Spec details for the Movado Connect are light, but Movado does say that its new watch features Android Wear 2.0, more than 100 dial variations, and “smooth edge-to-edge crystal.” The Movado Connect collection will launch in fall 2017 __with five men’s styles. Pricing will start at $495.

Hugo Boss Touch Android Wear smartatch

Also revealed today are new Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches from Hugo Boss and Tommy Hilfiger. As with the Movado Connect, there aren’t many details for these watches available quite yet. According to Wareable, though, the Hugo Boss Touch watch feature a stainless steel case, support for swapping straps, and NFC, but there’s no heart rate monitor onboard. The Hugo Boss Touch will launch in August for $395.

The Tommy Hilfiger TH24/7You will arrive later in 2017 for $299, says Wareable, making it the cheapest of the three near watches. Like the Hugo Boss watch, the TH24/7You lacks a heart rate monitor, but it’s also missing NFC support.

It’s good to see more Android Wear smartwatches coming to market, especially from traditional watch brands that can help to get their loyal customers to try a smartwatch. If you’re looking for a fully-loaded smartwatch to strap to your wrist, these new devices may not fit the bill, but they could be a good fit for folks that mostly just use their smartwatch for notifications and time.

Moto G5 Plus and Alcatel A30 launching at Amazon as discounted Prime Exclusive phones

Moto G5 Plus Amazon Prime Exclusive

Last year, Amazon launched its Prime Exclusive program that offers discounted smartphones that include personalized offers and ads on their lock screens. Now the program is expanding to include new phones.

Amazon is adding the Moto G5 Plus and Alcatel A30 to its Prime Exclusive program. The Moto G5 Plus is priced at $184.99 __with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, while the model __with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage is $239.99. The Alcatel A30 is $59.99.

To compare, the 2GB/32GB Moto G5 Plus normally sells for $229.99 ($45 off) and the 4GB/64GB model is $299.99 ($60 off). The Alcatel A30 normally sells for $99.99 ($40 off).

All three of these phones are available for pre-order today. The Moto G5 Plus will be released on March 31, while the Alcatel A30 will launch on April 19.

Alcatel A30 Amazon Prime Exclusive

As a refresher, the Moto G5 Plus runs Android 7.0 Nougat on a 5.2-inch 1920x1080 display and includes 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front cameras, a microSD card slot, octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor, and a 3000mAh battery.

The Alcatel A30 features a 5-inch HD display, 8-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front cameras, 16GB of storage, and a microSD slot. There’s also a quad-core Snapdragon 210 processor paired with 2GB of RAM. On the software side, the A30 is packing Android 7.0 Nougat.

As with previous Prime Exclusive phones, both the Moto G5 Plus and Alcatel A30 come with personalized ads and offers that are shown on their lock screens and are only available to Amazon Prime scubscribers. They also come preloaded with Amazon apps. All of this Amazon-ness may turn off some folks, but if you’re a regular user of Amazon services or you just don’t mind seeing Amazon on your lock screen, these Prime Exclusive phones offer a way to get a shiny new smartphone at a significant discount.

Instagram rolling out two-factor authentication for all, blurring for sensitive content

Instagram Android app

Instagram is rolling out new features that it hopes will make its service safer to use.

First up, two-factor authentication is now available to all Instagram users. You can enable it by tapping the gear icon on your profile and then selecting Two-Factor Authentication in the Account section. You’ll then be prompted to enter your phone number if you don’t already have it attached to your account, and then you’ll enter the confirmation code sent to you.

With two-factor authentication enabled, you’ll need to enter a security code sent to you by Instagram whenever you want to log in to your account.

Instagram two-factor authentication, sensitive content

Having two-factor authentication enabled can greatly increase the security of your account. __with it, someone would need access to your phone to get a security code to get into your account, rather than only needing your password like they would if you didn’t have two-factor authentication enabled.

Also rolling out today is a new Sensitive Content feature. This will cover photos and videos that’ve been deemed as Sensitive Content by Instagram. To view them, you’ll just need to tap to reveal the image or video.

Instagram says that while Sensitive Content posts don’t violate the service’s terms of service, they are images or videos that have been reported by someone in the community and that the Instagram team has confirmed are sensitive.

Google pledges to improve Android security update process

Google Android figure

In 2015, Google committed to pushing monthly security updates to Nexus devices, and now the company is doubling down on its focus on security.

Google today gave its Android Security 2016 Year in Review, saying that more than 735 million devices from over 200 manufacturers received a security update in 2016. “There’s still a lot of room for improvement however,” Google said, going on to say that it’s working to increase security updates by streamlining its security update program.

This streamlining process will make it even easier for device makers to deploy security patches. Google will also make it easier for companies to release A/B updates so that it’s easier for users to apply security patches.

Having a secure smartphone is important. Many folks store their whole lives on their smartphone, including photos, contact info, messages, and personal info, so it’s important that your smartphone is protected against malicious attacks. While Google is good about keeping its Nexus and Pixel phones up-to-date on security patches, not all other device makers are, so hopefully Google’s streamlining of the security update process will help other manufacturers increase their security update releases.

Other tidbits from Google’s security report include drops in the number of Potentially Harmful Application (PHA) installs and the fact that carrier and hardware partners released security updates for more than half of the top 50 devices worldwide in the last quarter of 2016.

When was the last time that your smartphone got a security update?

Samsung Galaxy S8 leaks reveal screen resolution, retail packaging

Samsung Galaxy S8 screen resolution

The Galaxy S8 leaks continue to flow ahead of Samsung’s event on March 29.

Two more notable GS8 leaks have now surfaced. First up, a photo that shows the Galaxy S8 screen resolution has appeared on Twitter. The full resolution of the phone is 2960x1440, but if you’d like to change the resolution of the extra tall display, you can move to 2220x1080 or even 1480x720.

We’ve known for a while now that the Galaxy S8 and S8+ will have large displays (rumored to be 5.8 and 6.2 inches, respectively) and that they’ll both be taller __with an 18:9 or so aspect ratio. Now we know the resolution, too. It’s no surprise that the GS8 phones will have Quad HD resolution screens since the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge were QHD, too, but it’s still nice to see a leak support that info.

In other Galaxy S8 news, images of what may be the Galaxy S8+’s packaging have leaked. The box is all black, __with white text on the front and back that reveal the specific device you’ve got, the storage capacity, and its package contents and legal info on the back. There’s a big blue “S8+” on the front of the box, too.

Android O announced by Google, developer preview now available

Android O icon official Google

Surprise! Android O is official!

Google today announced a developer preview of Android O, the next major release of its mobile operating system. The preview is available for the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and Nexus Player. You’re going to have to put in some work if you want to install the update, because Google is only offering the preview as a file that you can download and flash. There’s no OTA update available yet.

As for what’s included in Android O, there’s a big focus here on battery life improvements. Google is putting more automatic limits on what apps can do in the background when it comes to implicit broadcasts, background services, and location updates. The goal here is to put limits on what apps can do while they’re running in the background, meaning that they’re less likely to hog performance and your battery life when you’re not using them.

Android O notification channels

Android O is also adding notification channels, which give developers better control over different kinds of notifications. This then lets users change the behavior of each notification category, giving them more fine-grained control over an app’s alerts. Android O also includes better visuals and groupings for notifications.

Picture-in-picture mode is coming __with Android O, too. As its name suggests, this feature lets you continue watching video on your phone or tablet while you’re doing things outside of that video app. Also included here is multi-display support for launching apps on a remote display.

With Android O, Google is also letting developers create adaptive icons. These app icons can be displayed in different shapes based on the mask chosen by the phone. These adaptive icons can also be animated.

Google is placing more of a focus on keyboard navigation __with Android O, as well, building a more reliable model for using the arrow and tab keys to navigate the OS.

Also included with Android O are autofill APIs. This feature should make it easier to use apps that autofill fields of information, like password apps.

Other developer-focused features of Android O include font resources in XML, wide-gamut color for apps, AAudio API for pro audio, WebView enhancements, and Java 8 language APIs and runtime optimizations.

Google will share more details about Android O at Google I/O in May.

There aren’t a ton of new user-facing features that’ve been announced for Android O yet, but that’s because it’s still in an early developer preview. What we do know so far makes the update sound nice, though. Battery life is one of those things that most every smartphone user wishes were better, so it’s good to hear that Google is focusing more on that issue with Android O. We’ll have to wait for the update to be released before we see exactly how much battery life these background app limits give us, though.

If you’re a developer that’s interested in giving Android O a try right now, you can find the images available for download right now. If you’re a normal user, you may want to hold off on installing this release, at least when it comes to your daily driver.

Google app on Android and iOS gaining tappable shortcuts for quick access to info and tools

Google already offers several ways to quickly get information on your smartphone, including the Google search widget on Android phones, but today it’s adding one more to the mix.

Google is adding shortcuts to its Google app on Android and iOS, and on Google.com on the mobile web. These shortcuts are meant to give you quick, easy access to things like sports scores, a coin flip, Google Translate, Tic Tac Toe, the weather, and more.

These tappable shortcuts will appear right below the Google search box. If you’d like to see more than the handful Google shows there, you can tap the arrow to see all of the shortcuts available.

Google app shortcuts sports scores

As for why Google is rolling out these shortcuts, the company says that while the Google search box is good for finding specific info, these shortcuts provide more general info when you just want to catch up on a specific topic. For example, you can go to the Entertainment shortcut to see what’s playing at a local theater and to get TV and movie news. Or you can tap the Sports to see a stream of the latest scores.

The Feed shown in your Google app is somewhat specific, surfacing scores for your favorite teams or names of people that you’ve searched for before. __with these new shortcuts, Google aims to show you a general feed of the topic that you’re interested in. You can also use the shortcuts to quickly jump to games and tools, like a level tool when you need to make sure that something is straight but only have your phone. There’s even shortcuts for features that Google offers a dedicated app for, like Google Translate, so that you can use the tool without having to hunt for and download a new app.
