Piper Jaffray: Record number of teens plan on buying an iPhone for their next handset

A survey conducted by brokerage house Piper Jaffray reveals that a record 81% of teens say that their next smartphone will be an Apple iPhone. According to the firm, that number bodes well for sales of the Apple iPhone 7s, Apple iPhone 7s Plus and the 10th-year anniversary model dubbed the Apple iPhone 8. The previous high survey result came about last fall when 79% of teens said that their next phone would be an iPhone. Over 75% of teens surveyed told Piper Jaffray that they already own an iPhone.

The Apple Watch doesn't do as well in the wearable category where most teens favor the Fitbit over the Apple Watch by a 71% to 10% margin. Only 13% of the teens surveyed by Piper Jaffray expect to buy an Apple Watch over the next 6-months.

Apple itself expects to sell a record number of iPhone units this year. The iPhone 8 alone could sell anywhere from 70 million to 95 million units in 2017 based on the number of OLED screens that Samsung is making available to Apple for the calendar fourth quarter. Last year, Apple sold a record 78.3 million handsets during the three month period that ended in December.
